2007 Shiraz

The smallest vintage release yet, from Balthazar Vineyard. Climatic conditions ensured great  fruit concentration while decisions to harvest early & allow long barrel maturation have delivered a classic, elegant Shiraz worthy of the name “Balthazar” Enjoy !

A classic drought year with record low winter & barely there Spring rain, ensured one of the lowest cropping years on record. The Balthazar Shiraz crop was 50% down on average yield.

Harvesting was the earliest on record, with the House Block parcel picked 15th & the Hill Block component picked 22nd February. These 2 parcels were vinified separately in small, open-top fermenters for 7 days, being pumped over twice daily.

Racked into new and seasoned French oak barrels, the 2 components matured for 21 months before being blended and bottled in December 2008.

“Crimson-purple; the decision to pick in mid-February paid big dividends with this shiraz, ditto the 21 months in French oak hogsheads, mainly seasoned; it has juicy plum and black cherry fruit, and none of the toughness that marred many 07’s.” James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
